Sad Headlines

I was really horrified to read this story in Friday's paper:

A woman in Queens was shot and killed by her abusive husband, with whom she had two kids. He was carrying a bouquet of flowers into her workplace and as he handed them to her he shot her in the face. He then killed himself in another location.

What is really disturbing is this revelation:

"Figueroa, who had a prior murder arrest, had beaten Guimmia and threatened to kill her in recent weeks, according to her family. Sources said that about two weeks ago, Guimmia had complained to police that her husband was harassing her and that he had a gun. But sources said police in the 114th Precinct, who took the report, failed to issue an investigative card.
A police spokesman yesterday declined to comment."

I have been harassed by an ex since January. It just makes you think how crazy they will become when you become their obsession. I went to the police and they said that I could file a report, but there was nothing they could do until he became threatening. I called the precinct again when his messages became more aggravated. They never returned my call.

I feel that we have a long way to go in protecting victims of abuse. The system continues to fail these women time and time again. There was the recent story of the Vegas woman, who went to talk to her ex and ended up being killed and dismembered.
I am on call with SAVI this Saturday and it really makes me wonder what to tell these survivors.
