Last Day

Today marks the end of my fashion career. Tomorrow I'll be on a plane to Italy... and I won't have to wake up at 7 am and deal with rush hour for the next two years. I've paid every bill, saved enough money, bought everything I need, packed both intelligently and fashionably; there are literally no loose ends. It's a great feeling - but I don't feel it yet.

Perhaps it's because I'm still in the office, listening to the same late 2000's pop rock mix and huddling under a sweater. I remember the first time I worked in an office and I was horrified by particular aspects of the corporate culture - the break room jokes, the food talk, the "Happy Monday" greetings, the dress code. It felt a bit like death. Five years later, I engage in the same mindless chatter, and dutifully wear black when told. I even stopped getting manicures because our CEO requires pale polish - I'd rather go nude than wear baby pink. But no more... I can wear whatever I want, wake up whenever I want and go wherever I please. If I feel like I am done with my work at 2pm, I can stop instead of sitting around for four hours surfing the internet and blogging.

Incidentally, I'm done with my work. I just completed my exit interview and got my last check. My boss is out of the country on business......and, I've just decided to skip off early and go see Bad Teacher with my friend David.

Ahh, freedom. I finally feel it now.

Fashion's Dirty Secret

This is old news, but I've only just heard about it now. The man pictured above was found guilty of 16 counts of sexual assault, battery, and lewd acts. He was a fashion photographer who - you guessed it - routinely raped the young models who were to be his subjects.

What's shocking is that the media barely covered this. What's shocking is, when people found out, they were not surprised by the rape - but by the fact that the models came forward.

Fashion has been accused of many things - promoting unhealthy body image, racism, child labor. It's now being said that the industry did it's best to cover up this empowering story of young women standing up for what's right - career be damned - and winning a rape trial! Fifty-nine years is something to celebrate. This conviction could've been used as a platform to empower other models to come forward. Often the girls are afraid of the ramifications if they speak up - after all, fashion is a small world, and there's always a new 'face'.

When I was working in PR, I used to host model castings. Some of my friends asked if I would conduct the castings viciously (as is the stereotype) by calling out their flaws. I remarked that I was always positive with each young girl and that I often wanted to mother them a bit. While I was only 23 at the time, some of these girls were barely 14. When I think of what some young models have endured, especially in light of this article, it makes me so sad. I remember being 16 and being asked to model, which my mother (having been a model herself) expressely forbade. I was angry at the time - but now I am so thankful.

As discussed in The Guardian article, there are some models who are moving forward with efforts to unionize or at least provide support for young girls under this kind of institutional pressure. It's sad but true - the fashion world won't change unless the models band together. This conviction was a great first step. Media, take note!

Fashion Meets Finance

Is there anything more contrived than a mixer between fashion girls & banker boys? I mean, don't get me wrong, I've dated my fair share of bankers... but I found them the old fashioned way. Like, by walking down the street, or into a bar, or anywhere in Murray Hill/Midtown, or on a Friday night, or in the subway. I mean, it's fucking simple. In fact, I basically majored in bankers the first few years in New York.

Let me save these chicks a few years and a few tears - in general, they're super fun, but don't you dare give them your heart. Not until they turn 32, at least.

The Editrix's Tricks

Guess who...

Taylor Tomasi Hill, Accessories Editrix at Marie Claire

Taylor Tomasi (before the Hill), Kate Lamphear and Mary Kate Steinmiller have been some of my favorite fashionable editors for years now. They're often featured on The Sartorialist and other style blogs, though I actually became familiar with the ladies during my days in fashion PR. They'd sail into the showroom for our appointment looking fabulous; their intimidating clothing belied a kind & lovely demeanor. While Kate and Taylor were 'famous' when I met them, I've enjoyed watching Mary Kate rise in the ranks.

So it's no surprise Refinery 29 did an awesome feature on Taylor Tomasi Hill's West Village apartment and closet. To DIE for.

A few of my favorites she mentioned:

PUNKROSE shoes

Madewell Boyfriend Jean

Rick Owens leather jacket

The Gall of Galliano

John Galliano, by Getty Images via NY Mag

The fashion world is saddened by John Galliano's displays this past week. For the uninitiated, Galliano has been accused of making severly racist remarks supporting Hitler and condemning Jewish people. Video has surfaced. He denies the charges. He's been fired from Dior. Natalie Portman, who is Jewish, has spoken out against the designer. She has terminated her contract as the face of Miss Dior Cherie. There are rumours of rehab. Now it's come to light that he will be tried. In France, anti-Semitism is a punishable offence.

Galliano was a fashion inspiration for a decade, at least. It's terrible that he's chosen to make his legacy one of vitrol and hate. Read more here.

Monochrome Anthracite & Fox Fur Friday

I was totally inspired by the Michael Kors runway. I'm loving the return to ladylike glamour & I particularly enjoyed the monochrome. I rummaged around in my closet today and managed to do a remix - complete with fox fur.

Fox Fur Jacket: Oscar de la Renta
Mock turtleneck with diamonte detail: Nina Ricci
Bandage pencil skirt: Herve Leger
Strappy heels: Dolce Vita
Armour ring: BCBG

I'm totally doing the high/low thing in reverse (cheap shoes, expensive clothes). Walking in the park with Jason after work & had to dress the part... it's a warm, lovely day.

Happy Friday, xoxo

Spring Forward

I often liken my fashion job to that of an alcoholic working in a bar. I just can't quit this stuff!

What I'm looking forward to for spring:

a little Parisian chic

Elizabeth & James

Every year for my birthday, I buy myself a dress. I have been dreaming about a dress like this for... years? I love green on a blonde.

Alice & Olivia

This blue baby is lovely, too. I adore cap sleeves.

Tibi

Lanvin is coming to H&M in just a few short days. Below, a hint of Elbaz's genius. As one woman told him, "Every time I wear a Lanvin dress, a man falls in love with me." How could you blame him?

Lanvin

And, the Olsen's take on the white ruffle. Huge for spring.

Elizabeth & James

Like I said, I'm a sucker for green on a blonde. Loving this cool mint.

Elizabeth & James

Freaking fabulous duster coat. I can picture myself doing just about anything in it. Must have.

Elizabeth & James

I don't think I'll ever fall out of love with the gladiator. Here, updated with a bit of lapin.

Pucci

My family and I spend every Christmas on the Colorado slopes... but my dear Aries will be sunning herself. Below, what I would rock- with a tan, natch:

Malene Birger

Wouldn't it just be fab over this suit?

This is why I love fashion...

Our refrigerator at the office:

Today I had to go to Harlem to get the last of my medical clearance for our volunteer work. I forgot I was treking up there while dressing this AM, and while my ensemble is lovely and stylish for our midtown offices, it got a bit of a different reaction uptown.

"If you're outfit didn't look so expensive, I'd call you a hooker!"

I replied, "And you're...what? Homeless?!"

And then I ran.

Miss Jackson, If You're Nasty...

Just found these on the Nasty Gal Clothing website...

OBSESSED!

I love NastyGal for slightly subversive, downtown pieces on the cheap. Think mesh, body-con, animal prints, fringe... comme ci:

Nothing wrong with a little bit of sex to spice up a typical Tuesday.

I love a nude back. It's the new cleavage (not that I was ever really into la cleave)

I'm (slightly) too old to do a whole head-to-toe Nasty, but certain pieces are just PARFAIT, and perfectly incorporate into my wardrobe. Since I work in a creative industry, I would totally wear these to work with a slouchy sweater dress or chubby fur.

The cherry on this leather-luv sundae? They're only $168. The absolute right price for a trendy item I will wear to death, but probably won't be wriggling into for decades to come...

GAAAAH.

Miss Moss

How quickly the fashion world forgives a cocaine bust when you can rock leather skinnies like that. Loving the leather lapel, too. She does it better than anyone.

That is all.

Hump day

A reminder that fashion isn't all that serious, if even La Wintour can crack a grin once in a while.

I've been a bit of a stressball lately with studying and a big increase in work pressure combined with my impending volunteer work for an amazing womens' organization. The training alone is 40 hours, and 10 of those fall on the same weekend that my new boss wants me to travel for market. Unfortch, missing the training is unacceptable, and it would be another year-long process to get approved. So my new and very cool boss has decided to do the unthinkable, and fly me out for a quick & dirty. Here's hoping my plane lands on time...

Everyone needs a little Hump day pick-me-up. Here's hoping yours is more literal than figurative ;)

Toast to Fashion

As I mentioned before, I saw one of my all time favorite fashion bloggers, FashionToast, at the runway show. She had an incredible seat (right across the way from Anna Wintour) and I saw her snapping away all show long.

As an aside, I noticed Anna Wintour only looked at the models right when they passed her, and then followed them as they turned. I was wondering why she prefered to look at the gowns from behind...

Anyway, I clicked over to fashion toast (www.fashiontoast.com) this morning and saw the truly beautiful detail shots she was able to capture. Enjoy & Happy Friday!

I plan to make good use of my weekend... a birthday party, dinner, an event, and perhaps 'Danny Beach' as my friend hilariously calls his Saturday evening balcony parties (complete with hot tub, DJ and copious drinks so he's not too far off).

Here's hoping the weather's not nearly as dreary as it is this AM... although I did indulge in a little mid-day pick-me-up (quite literally) so I really can't complain.
